Here is a detailed breakdown of your journey to a new smile with implants from Allsopp Dental

Dental implants, step-by-step
1

Request a consultation

Click the link, fill your details into our form and one of our friendly team members will be in touch soon to book your consultation and discuss your smile goals.

2

Schedule an in-practice consultation

At your in-person visit to our practice, you will have a complete dental examination. We will take all the digital records needed to plan your dental implant treatment and then present you with a full treatment plan and review your payment options. If you decide to pursue treatment, we will schedule the appointment to place your implant.

We use the latest dental implant technology including the Cadent iTero Intra-Oral Scanner & Digital Impression System and CBCT (3D) imaging to capture accurate images and plan your treatment.

Implant placement

Placing your dental implant is a brief and minimally invasive surgical procedure. Dr Allsopp or Dr Soorae will numb the implant site with a local anaesthetic,  drill a small hole then place the implant screw. The site will then be left to heal.

Healing

Healing is the most crucial phase of the dental implant process. This is the time when the bone in your jaw will heal around and fuse with the implant screw in a natural process called osseointegration. It can take three to nine months for your implant to integrate with the bone, and it cannot serve as a fully functioning tooth until that happens. Once your healing process is complete, your implant will be ready for restoration.

Restoration planning

We will take a digital scan of your implant to help us design your restoration. There are no messy dental impressions. We will place a temporary ‘tooth’, or scan body, in the implant site, and this will be the guide that helps the Straumann scanner accurately capture the position of your new restoration. After scanning your mouth, we will remove this guide and then schedule the appointment where you will receive your new implant crown or bridge.

Restoration placement

At your final appointment, Dr Allsopp or Dr Soorae will fix your permanent restoration (one or more false teeth) to your implant abutment. They will check the fit to ensure it functions comfortably, and you will leave with a brand new smile.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a restoration that replaces a whole tooth from root to crown. It looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth. Implants are typically made from titanium, a safe and biocompatible material that is used in many other medical implants and surgical procedures.

An implant comprises a titanium root topped off with a restoration that gives the false tooth a realistic appearance and function. The titanium screw portion fits snugly in the bone tissue of your jaw. Only the upper portion is visible above your gums and this is covered with a dental restoration such as a crown or bridge or denture.

Dental implants are popular alternatives to other tooth replacements like bridges and partial or complete dentures. Implants are unique because they replace tooth roots and the visible upper portion of teeth, so they provide both functional and aesthetic value.

Benefits of dental implants

Dental implants offer many unique benefits:

Comfort

Dental implants fit in naturally with the rest of the teeth in your mouth. They are independent restorations that anchor directly to your bone, so they do not need to rest on your gums or other teeth for support.

Functionality

Implants work just like natural teeth, and they can even increase the strength of your bite.

Aesthetics

Dental implants do more than fill in gaps in your smile. They also preserve your tooth alignment by preventing your other teeth from shifting.

Just like natural tooth roots, implants stimulate the bone in your jaw and this prevents the bone loss that typically occurs when natural tooth roots are missing. Thus, dental implants will help to maintain the height and shape of your smile. If your smile has already started to sink and crease due to a lack of teeth, implants can fill it back out again.

Implant restorations look lifelike and no metal parts will be visible when you smile. No one will know that your implant is not a natural tooth.

Health

You can enjoy improved nutrition with dental implants since they will enable you to eat all kinds of foods.

Confidence

You will experience a major boost in your confidence that will stay with you for a lifetime. Dental implants will improve the appearance of your smile by replacing lost or damaged teeth. Because implants are so secure, they will also help you smile, laugh, eat, speak and sing with confidence as you will not have to worry about your false teeth falling out.

Your dental implant treatment at Allsopp Dental

Dental implant treatment at Allsopp Dental consists of two phases:

  • Surgical placement of the implant in your jawbone
  • Fabrication of your restoration and then seating it onto your dental implant

Your dental implant dentists in Walsall

Dr Jonathan Allsopp has been placing dental implants since 1996 and has placed over 2,500 implants to date. He is a member of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI).

Dr Mandeep Soorae brings five years of dental implant experience and Straumann-mentored training to our practice and is another respected Straumann dental implant dentist at Allsopp Dental.

For nervous patients

We are ready to help. Dental anxiety is a very common issue, but it does not have to prevent you from getting the treatment you need. We can provide you with gentle dental sedation on-site at our practice to help you relax during your treatment.

Why Straumann implants?

You may have noticed that we often mention the Straumann brand when we talk about dental implants. This is because Straumann is the only brand that Dr Allsopp and Dr Soorae trust when providing the best possible treatment to their Walsall dental implant patients.

Straumann is a global brand known for excellence, innovation and quality in their tooth replacement solutions. The implants are backed by some 30 years of scientific experience, and Straumann has sold millions of them around the world. The company guarantees their products for life.

The doctors at our practice are Straumann Gold+ implant providers.

Your life with dental implants

Your new dental implants will not have any sensation because implants are not connected to your nervous system. Other than that, your implants will feel very much like natural teeth when you chew with them.

Dental implants can help you enjoy an improved quality of life. As full tooth replacements, implants will allow you to:

  • Eat a variety of nutritious foods
  • Speak clearly
  • Smile with confidence
  • Prevent the loss of bone in your facial structure

Once your titanium-based dental implants have fused with the bone in your jaw, they will stay securely in place for many years. You should be able to enjoy your new implants for the rest of your life, provided you take good care of them.

Are you a candidate for dental implants?

Are you missing one or more teeth?

If so, you are already a likely candidate for dental implants.

These are the most important things you need to have to get dental implants:

  • A fully developed jaw
  • Sufficient levels of healthy bone in your jaw
  • Healthy gums
  • Good oral hygiene
  • Stable overall health

There are some instances in which implants are not advisable.

For example, teenagers and children do not qualify for implants because the bone in their mouths is still growing and changing and cannot successfully retain a permanent dental implant.

Smoking can compromise the implant healing process. You will have a better chance of implant success if you do not smoke or if you can cut back on smoking during your implant treatment.

Unstable health conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure or certain medical treatments such as radiation therapy can also make dental implant treatment inadvisable.

Finally, a dental implant needs plenty of healthy bone for support. If the bone in your jaw is shallow or if you have gum disease, then you may not be ready for implants. Fortunately, our team at Allsopp Dental will help you by recommending treatments that can restore your gums and the bone in your jaw.

Common questions about dental implants

  • Am I too old for dental implants?

There is no age limit for getting implants. The most important thing is to have good oral health, adequate bone in your jaw and stable overall health. Many individuals over the age of 60 have successfully received dental implants and experienced an improved quality of life.

  • Am I too young for dental implants?

It is possible to be too young for dental implants. Teenagers and children under the age of 18 do not qualify for implants because their jaws and teeth are still undergoing crucial development.

  • How do I know if dental implants are right for me?

The best way to find out if implants are the right treatment for you is to schedule a consultation with a Walsall implant dentist like Dr Allsopp or Dr Soorae.

  • What if I don’t qualify for dental implants?

We will recommend the best tooth replacement solution that suits your unique needs and circumstances. If implants are not right for you, we will suggest alternative treatments or inform you of steps you can take to prepare your mouth for dental implants.

  • Are dental implants uncomfortable?

Dental implants fit in naturally with the rest of your teeth without putting pressure on other parts of your mouth. You may experience some discomfort after the surgical portion of your treatment, but once they have healed, your implants will be so comfortable that you won’t even notice them.

  • Are implants and dentures the same thing?

Dentures are plates of removable false teeth that rest directly on the teeth and gums. Implants are individual titanium posts that sit in the bone tissue and support restorations like crowns, bridges, and dentures.

  • How long will dental implants last me?

As long as you take good care of your dental implants, they have the potential to last a lifetime.

  • Do I still have to brush and floss if I get dental implants?

Yes, we strongly urge you to continue maintaining excellent oral hygiene after getting dental implants. Implants may not be real teeth, but you should treat them as such. Keep your implants clean with daily brushing and flossing to prevent gum infections that can compromise the health of your dental implants.

  • Are dental implants removable?

Dental implants themselves are not removable. Once an implant post has fused with your bone, it is there for life. Most restorations (false teeth) are fixed permanently to implants and are not removable. Implant dentures, however, attach to implants with clips which allow you to take them out for easy cleaning.

  • I already wear dentures. Can I still get dental implants?

If you already wear dentures, then you may be an excellent candidate for full-mouth implants. You could choose between getting implants that attach to your denture or getting implants that support a permanent bridge. Schedule a consultation with one of our implant dentists to find out whether you are a candidate.

  • What is the success rate of treatment with dental implants?

Dental implants are one of the most predictably successful treatments in dentistry, with a success rate of 96–98%.
